🌲 Wilderness Warriors

Building Resilience in Nature

A fall adventure where children learn to find their rhythm, notice the world around them, and discover their capacity to meet challenge.

Ages 8–14 | Thursdays, 4:00–5:15 p.m. | Fall Session

What if resilience isn't something we teach but rather something children experience?

Children don't develop resilience by simply being told to "keep trying."

They develop it when they experience something that is challenging...

When they aren't quite sure what to do...

When they need to slow down, regroup, ask for help, try a different approach, or encourage someone else.

Wilderness Warriors creates space for those experiences to happen naturally within the supportive and regulating environment of nature.

Through adventure, mystery, movement, teamwork, and exploration, children are invited to stretch beyond what feels comfortable while knowing they are part of a community.

🌿 Three R's. One Fall Adventure.

Wilderness Warriors is rooted in three ideas from the Rooted in Rhythm™ framework:

RHYTHM

Find Your Rhythm.

Every adventure begins with a familiar ritual.

We pause.

We breathe.

We listen.

We notice.

We connect.

Nature is constantly moving through rhythms of activity and rest, sound and silence, light and dark, growth and change.

Our opening ritual gives children an opportunity to arrive, settle their nervous systems, and find their own rhythm before stepping into the day's adventure.

Regulation comes before challenge.

REALIZATION

Notice the World. Notice Yourself.

Fall gives us a changing landscape to explore.

Leaves change.

Light changes.

Temperature changes.

Animals prepare for winter.

The forest sounds different.

Each week, children will be invited to slow down enough to notice these changes—and to become curious about what they are experiencing themselves.

What do you notice?

What has changed since the last time we were here?

What does your body feel like when you're excited?

What happens when something feels difficult?

What helps you keep going?

Realization is about developing awareness—of ourselves, our surroundings, and the relationship between the two.

RESILIENCE

Meet the Challenge.

Then comes the mission.

Each week, the Forest Guardian will leave clues leading campers toward a new adventure.

Obstacle courses.

Hiking challenges.

Team missions.

Mysteries.

Puzzles.

Outdoor skills.

And challenges that require children to think, move, communicate, adapt, and persist.

Some challenges will feel easy.

Others won't.

That's intentional.

Children will have opportunities to practice:

"I can try."

"I can ask for help."

"I can try another way."

"I can help someone else."

"I didn't think I could do that!"

Resilience grows through these moments.

🧭 Every Week Holds a New Mission

Wilderness Warriors combines adventure + mystery + movement + nature + connection.

Campers will follow clues from the Forest Guardian as they work together to unlock new challenges.

They might have to:

🌲 Navigate through the woods
🥾 Complete an outdoor obstacle challenge
🧩 Solve a mystery
🤝 Work together as a team
🔥 Learn or practice an outdoor skill
🍂 Observe seasonal changes
💪 Push through a challenge
🌬️ Return to their rhythm when things feel overwhelming

No two children will experience the adventure in exactly the same way.

That's part of the magic.

🤝 The Power of a Multi-Age Community

Wilderness Warriors intentionally brings together children ages 8–14.

Why?

Because children have much to learn from one another.

Younger campers can observe, learn from, and be encouraged by older peers.

Older campers have opportunities to practice leadership, responsibility, patience, and communication.

And everyone has something to contribute.

There isn't one way to be a Wilderness Warrior.

Some children will lead.

Some will observe.

Some will encourage.

Some will solve the puzzle.

Some will take the physical challenge.

Some will quietly notice something no one else saw.

Every child brings a strength to the group.

🌟 What Your Child May Develop

Resilience

Practice meeting challenges, persisting, adapting, and recovering when things don't go as planned.

Regulation

Develop experiences and rituals that support awareness, grounding, and regulation of the nervous system.

Confidence

Experience the pride that comes from trying something new and discovering, "I can do hard things."

Teamwork

Practice cooperation, communication, leadership, encouragement, and asking for help.

Problem-Solving

Use puzzles, mysteries, and real-world challenges to practice flexible thinking and creative solutions.

Body Confidence

Climb, hike, balance, navigate, carry, crawl, move, and explore through meaningful outdoor activity.

Connection to Nature

Develop curiosity, awareness, and a deeper relationship with the changing natural world.

Belonging

Experience being part of a community where individual strengths are recognized and valued.

🍂 Fall Is the Perfect Time for This Adventure

Fall naturally invites us to notice change.

The days become shorter.

The air becomes cooler.

The leaves begin to change.

The forest prepares for winter.

And children are changing, too.

They are growing in independence.

Testing their abilities.

Discovering what they can do.

Learning when to push forward—and when to pause.

Wilderness Warriors uses the rhythm of the season as part of the experience.

Rather than simply learning about resilience, children get to practice it in real time.

🌲 This Isn't Just Another After-School Activity.

It's a place to:

Move.

Explore.

Connect.

Notice.

Try.

Fail.

Adapt.

Laugh.

Help.

Lead.

Begin again.

And discover:

"Maybe I can."
