What can help?

Supporting a child who appears checked out, disconnected, or avoidant can be deeply exhausting and frustrating, especially when you’re showing up with care, patience, and good intentions. When a child doesn’t engage or seems uninterested in anything, it can leave adults feeling helpless, discouraged, or even questioning themselves. What’s important to remember is that this kind of withdrawal is often not a lack of motivation or effort, but a sign that the child’s nervous system is overwhelmed or protecting itself. Beneath the disconnection is a child doing their best to cope.
